This week we visited Long Island and I am sure we will be back. Long Island was settled in1630, so it has a long and illustrious history. Long Island was always a large farming community and at the time of the revolutionary war, Long Island had one of the largest herds of cattle in the colonies. With the advancing British troops, General George Washington ordered a full scale round up to deprive the invading troops of beef.
This was the first large scale cattle drive recorded in our nation’s history and Long Island still has one of the oldest working cattle ranches in the USA. George Washington came back after the war to thank the loyal patriots for all of their sacrifices.
SO IT IS TRUE…GEORGE WASHINGTON SLEPT HERE!!!!!
Today Long Island‘s population is larger than nineteen states and we have almost as many registered cars as people. So you will understand the nickname of one of our major roadways, the Long Island Expressway …The Worlds Largest Parking Lot. Yet we have retained many of our colonial charms. You can visit the Cold Spring Harbor whaling museum and get a feel of life way back when. Long Island is the largest adjoining island in the USA. Hence we are surrounded by water and have some of the best fishing anywhere on this planet. We also have some furry friends from up north who come down to visit us during our winter. Did you know that ninety percent of the almost three million people on LONG ISLAND think they have to go to Alaska or California to see these furry friends I mentioned earlier? CLICK HERE. That’s right seals. Each winter thousands of these playful creatures frolic in our local waters. Recently they have had pups born right here in our estuaries. Geography Click here
Every country every state, every town has one ……a local FOLKLORE, MYTH OR LEGEND. For this week’s folklore, myth or legend. Click here
Don’t forget if you missed the show you can always order it on DVD or VHS.

CHECK OUT THE TRAILER
Our trip to long Island was a wonderful learning experience. We met our neighbor Katey and her Dad, Bob, who has captured or rescued, on behalf of the Nassau County Police Department, DEADLY SNAKES SUCH AS…. COBRA’S, RATTLESNAKES, VIPERS plus his share of lizards and even some alligators, right here in the heart of suburbia.
We got up close and personal with those wonderful, playful and entertaining seals. We shared in the plight of endangered sea turtles and learned that we have fish that visit from Africa. We also were introduced to Titan the harbor porpoise whose successful release warmed all our hearts. Don’t forget to go to our link for Riverhead Research Center and keep tabs on Titan and all the wildlife released by our friends at the Riverhead Research Center. On our way to Riverhead Research via the magic of television, we crashed landed in Florida and had a close encounter of the scary kind with some really BIG alligators. You will only see this segment on our website.
Don’t forget to view our folklore myth and legend segment, because it’s true?
And of course our video clips will include everyone’s favorite…bloopers.
